Christmas is over and we’re entering “dark and dreary January“, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some great boating destinations! Relax and recover from December by going on a relaxed boating weekend. Here’s my top picks for boating destinations for January and February:
Victoria Whiskey Festival
Where: Victoria, BC
When: Jan. 16 to Jan. 19, 2020
Cruise to Victoria and stay in the Inner Harbour and go to the Victoria Whisky Festival. Exercise your tasting skills and expand your knowledge on whiskey. Get moorage at the public docks, or upgrade and stay at the Coast Victoria Hotel marina and enjoy hotel amenities such as the pool and sauna with your moorage!
War of 1812
Where: Salt Spring Island
When: January 26, 2020
A couple blocks from the docks in Ganges you can find the ArtSpring Theatre. Go for lunch at the Treehouse Cafe, walk up to the Theatre for your afternoon show, then stop in at El Loco Taco for a drink and appetizer on your way back to your boat.
Fishing Derby
Where: Mill Bay
When January 18, 2020
Cruise to the Mill Bay marina, enjoy the pub and participate in the fishing derby to raise money for the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue.
Robbie Burns Night
Where: Saturna Island
When: February 1, 2020
The Saturna Island Lions Club host several events on the island throughout the year, one being Robbie Burns Night. Robbie Burns Day is officially January 25th, so if you’re a lover of haggis, this year you have an opportunity to extend the festivities of Robbie Burns Day! There is a small public dock, or you can anchor in Lyall Harbour with about a 20 minute walk to the Community Recreation Centre.
Annual Artists’ Registry Show and People’s Choice Awards
Where: Friday Harbour
When: Fri – Mon, to Feb 21, 2020
Enjoy a weekend in Friday Habour and go to an art exhibit with over 70 local artists. If you go before January 20th, you get to vote for your favorite artist! Not a bad way to spend a weekend, spend your afternoon looking at art and then finish your day with dinner at the Coho Restaurant.
